“Great Scott!” The Future of Biopharma Manufacturing at the Product Show

“Great Scott!” The Future of Biopharma Manufacturing at the Product Show

  • Posted by H. Steven Kennedy
  • On August 21, 2018

It’s getting closer! Yes, the future – but also the 2018 ISPE Product Show with a robust educational program that will have something for everyone!

This year there will be 20 presentations throughout the day, divided into four tracks:

  • Track 1: Risk Management & Quality
  • Track 2: The Future Of Biopharma Manufacturing
  • Track 3: Biopharma Manufacturing Efficiencies & Improvements
  • Track 4: Optimizing Facilities Through Innovations & Technologies

Educational sessions will be upstairs on the Red Level. So just take the elevator from the Show floor and follow the signs.

Last week, I wrote about Track 1: Risk Management & Quality. If you missed it, you can click here  to check out that post. This week, I want to talk about Track 2: The Future of Biopharma Manufacturing. I think this is going to be my favorite track and I am really looking forward to hearing where these industry leaders envision the industry is going.

First at 10:30am, Matthew Kennedy of CRB will present Next Generation Biomanufacturing. The presentation will revolve around how new biomanufacturing technologies now being deployed can dramatically reduce a building’s footprint and improve the utilization of assets. Matt will highlight case studies that demonstrate this concept.

Then at 12:00pm, Jim Levin of Perkins + Will discusses a Risk Based Approach to GMP Manufacturing Facility Design. Grab some of the free food and head upstairs to learn about the risk assessment process and how it integrates with the design of manufacturing facilities for FDA-regulated products. The result? Construction of improved manufacturing environments to consistently produce high quality therapies that are safe and effective.

At 1:30pm, Dr. Sue Behrens of IPS – Integrated Project Services, LLC describes Continuous Manufacturing for Biologics & Vaccines. Significant advances have been made in this area, many in combination with Single Use Technologies. Dr. Behrens will discuss currently available capabilities for upstream and downstream unit operations and process control strategies.

After that, at 3:00pm, Indu Conley and Ryan Williams of DPS Group will make a timely presentation on Factories of the Future to Factories of the Here and Now: New Generation Biologics. They will review a new facility design for the manufacturing of mRNA therapy and personalized vaccines using a recently delivered facility as a case study.

Track 2 ends at 4:30pm with a presentation by Morten Munk of NNE who has traveled all the way from Denmark to share his thoughts on Flexibility by Design. The discussion will cover several new trends in the design of biomanufacturing plants including an increased focus on logistics, training, level of automation and the implementation of robotics.

It is looking like this track is going to be over subscribed. So arrive early to any or all of the sessions if you want to be sure to get a seat. As Doc Brown once said, “Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.”

See you next week when I mathematically prove that Time is Money…
