On November 18^th, the Boston Area Chapter presented “Fast track Delivery: Balancing Capital Projects and Operations” via Zoom Webinar. This panel discussion covered project management techniques where activities are performed in parallel, instead of being carried out sequentially. Speakers included Dennis Lucey, Managing Director at PMA Consultants; Eric Karch, Senior Director of Global Reagent Manufacturing, Laboratory Diagnostics/Supply Chain Management at Siemens Healthineers; Greg Keller, Project Executive at Columbia Construction; and Rob Calvert, Architectural and Engineering Project Manager at Jacobs.

Dennis Lucey opened by sharing the benefits of a fast track delivery approach, citing improved time to market, flexibility in developing priorities, limiting escalations and the ability to be more reactive to a changing market and technologies. The team of experts were able to double the production capacity of the Siemens manufacturing facility in Walpole, MA, all while maintaining operations. From a design standpoint, fast track execution involved overlapping of phases and careful planning. This required unparalleled interdepartmental communication, flexibility, and accessibility. The team utilized an Integrated Schedule mindset where key milestones and touch points/handoffs were defined, and each party had their own detailed schedule.
